Why MUGAs need their own attention

A MUGA isn't a playground with a fence round it. The equipment takes repeated ball and body impact, the fixings work loose faster, and goal safety is a category of risk all of its own — unsecured and damaged goals have killed children in the UK, which is why BS EN 15312 exists. Many sites inspect the playground diligently and let the MUGA next to it drift. It shouldn't.

What we check

• Goals and hoops — anchorage, welds, net fixings, crossbar condition
• Rebound fencing and panels — fixings, sharp edges, panel integrity
• Gates — self-closers, latches, finger-trap gaps, hinge wear
• Surfacing — wear, seam condition, drainage, trip edges, line markings
• Entrapment and protrusion checks throughout
• Signage, lighting columns and ancillary items

What standard applies to MUGA inspections?

BS EN 15312 covers free-access multi-sports equipment — goals, hoops, rebound fencing and gates. Surfacing and the general duty-of-care framework sit alongside it. Goals are a particular focus: unsecured or damaged goals have caused fatalities in the UK.

How often should a MUGA be inspected?

The same three-tier regime as a playground: frequent visual checks, a detailed operational inspection every 1–3 months, and an independent annual assessment. MUGAs take heavy impact use, so fixings and rebound panels loosen faster than most playground equipment.

Do you inspect the fencing and gates too?

Yes — rebound fencing, panel fixings, gate self-closers, latches and finger-trap gaps are all part of the check, along with line markings, surfacing condition and drainage.
